Horizon Forbidden West: Nubis Evolved - Real-time Volumetric Clouds for Environments

Nubis is a Real-Time volumetric cloud system that I developed along with Nathan Vos and others at Guerrilla.

Nubis was originally designed to produce dynamic cloudscapes for the game, Horizon Zero Dawn. You can see some examples here. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/96BbN

In addition to using Nubis for cloudscapes, We now use them for Environments - mountain hugging clouds that the player can fly through on the PS5. All captures were made on a PlayStation 5.

You can look at the collection of Bryan Adams (https://www.artstation.com/delta307) to see how Orographic clouds were used for Horizon Forbidden West.

Look for a more detailed explanation of how this works at SIGGRAPH 2022. Schedule to be announced in the near future.

Clouds as Environments.
The new "Orographic" Cloud layer enables us to create new environments for the player when in flight. The technology uses a new modeling and rendering method which allows for performant and high quality results on PlayStation 5.
