Horizon Forbidden West: Nubis Evolved - Real-time Volumetric Clouds for VFX

Nubis is a Real-Time volumetric cloud system that I developed along with Nathan Vos and others at Guerrilla.

Nubis was originally designed to produce dynamic cloudscapes for the game, Horizon Zero Dawn. You can see some examples here. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/96BbN

In addition to using Nubis for cloudscapes, We now use it for VFX - in this case a giant superstorm. All captures were made on a PlayStation 5.

To learn more about the Superstorms, you can check out the GDC talk that I gave in 2022.

Clouds as VFX.
The "Tropospheric" Cloud system that is used for Cloudscapes was extended to allow for fast movement and internal lighting effects in order to produce Superstorm VFX elements that tied into story progression.
